Kim Paterson grew up in Clydebank. She studied Embroidered and Woven Textile Design at the Glasgow School of Art. From 1990-1993, under the artistic direction of Clare Higney, Kim worked as a textile artist and project designer for Needleworks Enterprises and Needleworks Limited (Glasgow’s first community business). During this time many commercial commissions and projects promoting the social use of sewing were completed including “Textures of the City”, which developed into an “open art school” exhibition at Glasgow’s Collins gallery in 1992. Following the birth of her son in 1992, whilst working freelance, Kim began to make both costumes and processional imagery for many public events and festivals. Work in this field led her to study alongside Stephen Foster as a student of John Blundall between 1996 - 1998. Kim worked with The World Through Wooden Eyes as a seamstress, costume maker and workshop leader. She has written for the puppet theatre, narrating “Segurotchka” (The Snow Maiden) over Christmas in 2007. Kim worked part-time as handwork tutor in the Glasgow Steiner School and continues to develop a growing interest in the imagination of the young child and its relationship to learning and play.
